Pueraria Mirifica Clinical Studies

Pueraria Mirifica is a plant which grows in forests in the North, the West and the North East of Thailand. It is known nine species of plants in the genus Pueraria in Thailand that are similar to each other, but Pueraria Mirifica has its own specific characteristics of the stamen and its hairy pod.

The major value of Pueraria Mirifica is its inter-connected tuberous roots in a form of round-shaped bulbs. These tuberous roots have a feature to accrue about 13 natural chemicals known as phytoestrogens including: miroestrol, daidzein, genistin, genistein, B-sitosterol, stigmasterol, coumestrol, pueraria, compesterol, mirificoumestan, kwakhurin and mirificin. Such estrogenic substance as miroestrol, contained in the rhizome of Pueraria mirifica, is more effective than human estrogen. It was proved by testing the effect of miroestrol in the premature female rats. As the results showed the sythetic estrogen, animal estrogen and human estrogen could be substituted by miroestrol. Phytoestrogen is also similar to an estrogen that all women have.

The features of Pueraria Mirifica have been studied by many science companies as the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Phramongkutklao College of Medicine, Bangkok and Thailand. They have made researches having involved breast cell lines and the activity of Pueraria mirifica in vitro. The results have occured sensational. It is defined that the root extract of Pueraria Mirifica is a powerful anti-estrogen against aggressive cell cancer lines in vitro. It acts by supporting fibroblasts in normal breast cells and inhabiting estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells (Unpublished, 2001, Sawatsri, S., Juntayanee, B., Jitpatima, S., Boonnao, P., Kampoo, C., Ayuttaya, N., Wongyai, S. and Sidell, N.).

Another study was carried out in Tokyo at the School of Medicine, Saint Mariane University by Kuramoshi, T. and Smitasiri, Y. They tested the action of Pueraria Mirifica in Japanese women at the age of 20 – 50 whom had been given a root powder of Pueraria Mirifica for seven days after menstruation. The result was that no one woman experienced heavy, severe, or missed menstruation.

The unique feature of Pueraria Mirifica was noticed in the East centuries ago, when it was even considered that Pueraria Mirifica possessed with ability to rejuvenate people.
