Breast Implant Dangers

It has already been well-known about the possibility of breaking and leaking of breast implants.
What may happen if silicone gel has leaked? There are several occurrences: nothing may feel if an implant shell with contracture scar around it breaks, but if the implant shell has no a contracture scar it may happen a leakage into the surrounding tissue causing a feeling of deflation of implant. If silicone gel in case of its leaking gathers in the breast, you may get a new scar around it. Sometimes silicone gel may walk into other areas of the body moving through the lymphatic system and causing disorder of connective tissue. In this case it will be difficult to remove all of the silicone gel even by means of operation.

In Birmingham and Alabama there was performed a study on 344 women with silicone gel-filled breast implants who had it before 1988. The task was to find out the status of their present breast implants by means of MRI examination. MRI examination showed that 344 women had had a total of 687 implants and among these 678 implants 378 implants were ruptured (55%), 73 (21%) had extracapsular silicone gel in one or both breasts. On the whole the study showed that
69% of the 344 women had at least one ruptured breast implant because of increasing age of the implant, manufacturing of the implant, and submuscular setting of the implant.

Here there is a list of dangerous points connected with operation or breaking/leaking of silicone gel and saline-filled implants: damage by surgical instruments during surgery, overfilling or underfilling of the implant with saline solution, capsular contracture and closed capsulotomy , stresses such as trauma or intense physical manipulation ,excessive compression during mammographic imaging, placement through umbilical incision , site injury to the breast, normal aging of the implant.
Capsular contracture and a tightening of the scar tissue that may be experienced because of healing are the most frequent complications. In this case you may need further surgery to remove the scar tissue or the implant.

According to the clinical studies of saline-filled breast implants produced by Mentor there were 9% occurrences of capsular contracture Grades III and IV for the 1264 patients with augmentation and 30% for the 416 reconstruction patients. According to another study produced by McGhan, the results were the following: 9% for the 901 augmentation patients and 25% for the 237 reconstruction patients.
